Fashion Competition Brief

 14th September 2018

The National Library of Scotland is running a fashion competition for designers who are currently completing, or have recently completed their studies at colleges, universities and art schools across Scotland. The competition invites designers to draw inspiration from 100 years of social, political and cultural change since the end of World War I.

The competition will culminate in a show of shortlisted designs in the National Library of Scotland in January 2019.  An overall winner will be chosen from the shortlist.  First prize for the competition is an award of £750 plus a professional photoshoot, with a model for the winning design.

Eligibility:To take part in the competition you must:

  • Be currently in your final year of studying fashion, textiles or an associated design discipline at a college, university or art school in Scotland, or
  • Have graduated from a fashion, textiles, or associated design course of study at a college, university or art school in Scotland in 2017 or 2018.

Please note that all shortlisted candidates will be required to provide evidence of student/graduate status.

The Brief

Designers are invited to design an outfit as a contemporary creative response to the social, political and cultural changes since the end of the First World War as reflected in fashion trends; changing gender assumptions; the breaking down of traditional roles; and in other aspects of our daily lives.

The Library has a wealth of information and resources to help with research on the brief and full details about the Library can be found here.

Submissions

All submissions must take the form of:

  • A finished drawing(s) of the outfit, plus some insights into the design process.
  • A short statement about the design (500 words) plus name, address, contact number for the designer and the name of their educational institution.

All entries must be submitted by e-mail as a PDF of no more than 5 pages to be sent to e.simpson@nls.uk.

Please note that submissions which do not meet these criteria will not be accepted.

Judging

Entries will be judged by a panel of fashion industry professionals, design academics and curators working in the field.  We will judge entries against the following criteria:

  • Creative interpretation of the brief
  • Contemporary style and taste
  • Evidence of potential

Shortlisted Entrants

8 shortlisted designers will be invited to make up their outfits for display on mannequins in the Library.  The Library will contribute towards the costs of making up.

Shortlisted entrants should be prepared to work with the External Relations department of the National Library of Scotland in the run up to the show as we prepare and distribute information for the media on the competition and the show.

Shortlisted entrants will be required to attend the Show and should also prepare a short statement about their work, their vision and their future aspirations.

The Show

The Show will take place in the National Library of Scotland in January 2019.  The shortlisted designs will be displayed on mannequins.  The show will launch with a special preview for fashion industry professionals on the 14th January before being open to the public on the 15th January 2019.

Prizes

A career development award of £750 and a post-competition photo-shoot of the winning design on a model (which will be held in the Library) will be awarded to the entrant who, in the opinion of the judges, best meets the criteria of the competition.

All shortlisted candidates will be invited back into the Library for a full-day creative industry workshop to explore how our collections can help support their development of brand and business practice as well as providing visual inspiration.  The workshop will be developed around the specific needs of the participants, and will be arranged for a time that suits all, and will run in February 2019.
